भाई-बहन के दिलों में पावन संबंधों की मजबूती और प्रेमभाव स्थापित करने वाला पर्व है ‘भैया दूज’। इस दिन बहनें अपने भाईयों को तिलक लगाकर ईश्वर से उनकी दीर्घायु की कामना करती हैं। कहा जाता है कि इससे भाई यमराज के प्रकोप से बचे रहते हैं। दीपावली के दो दिन बाद अर्थात् कार्तिक शुक्ल द्वितीया को मनाए जाने वाले इस पर्व को ‘यम द्वितीया’ व ‘भ्रातृ द्वितीया’ के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। बहुत से भाई-दिन सौभाग्य तथा आयुष्य की प्राप्ति के लिए इस दिन यमुना अथवा अन्य पवित्र नदियों में साथ-साथ स्नान भी करते हैं। भैया दूज मनाने के संबंध में कई किवंदतियां प्रचलित हैं। एक कथा यमराज और उनकी बहन यमुना देवी से संबंधित है।
भगवान सूर्यदेव की पत्नी छाया की कोख से यमराज और यमुना का जन्म हुआ था। यमुना अपने भाई यमराज से बहुत स्नेह करती थी और अक्सर उनसे अनुरोध करती रहती थी कि वे अपने इष्ट मित्रों सहित उसके घर भोजन के लिए पधारें लेकिन यमराज हर बार उसके निमंत्रण को किसी न किसी बहाने से टाल जाते। कार्तिक शुक्ल द्वितीया को यमुना ने यमराज को एक बार फिर भोजन के लिए आमंत्रित किया। उस समय यमराज ने विचार किया कि मैं तो अपने कर्त्तव्य से बंधा सदैव प्राणियों के प्राण ही हरता हूं, इसलिए इस चराचर जगत में कोई भी मुझे अपने घर नहीं बुलाना चाहता लेकिन बहन यमुना तो मुझे बार-बार अपने घर आमंत्रित कर रही है, इसलिए अब तो उसका निमंत्रण स्वीकार करना ही चाहिए।
यमराज को अपने घर आया देख यमुना की खुशी का ठिकाना न रहा। उसने भाई का खूब आदर-सत्कार करते हुए उनके समक्ष नाना प्रकार के व्यंजन परोसे। बहन के आतिथ्य से यमराज बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने उसे कोई वर मांगने को कहा। इस पर यमुना ने उनसे अनुरोध किया कि आप प्रतिवर्ष इसी दिन मेरे घर आकर भोजन करें और मेरी तरह जो भी बहन इस दिन अपने भाई का आदर-सत्कार करे, उसे तुम्हारा भय न रहे। यमराज ने बहन यमुना को उसका इच्छित वरदान दे दिया। ऐसी मान्यता है कि उसी दिन से ‘भैया दूज’ का पर्व मनाया जाने लगा।

Is baar, Yamaraj ne socha ki uska kartavya jivon ke jeevan lene ka hai, aur sansar mein koi bhi usse khushi khushi apne ghar bulane ke liye nahi bulayega. Lekin uski behan Yamuna ne use lagatar bulaya, isliye usne apni behan ki davat svikar karne ka faisla kiya.
Yamuna ke ghar pahuch kar, Yamaraj ko unki behan ne bahut adar se swagat kiya. Usne unhe vibhinn swadisht vyanjan diye. Apni behan ki atithyata se prabhavit hokar Yamaraj prasanna hue aur use ek vardan dene ki anumati di. Pratikriya mein, Yamuna ne unse vinamrata se prarthana ki ki har saal usi din unka bhojan karne ke liye aaye, aur jo bhi behan apne bhai ka samman is din kare, use bhay mukt ho. Yamaraj ne us vardan ko diya. aisi manyata hai ki us din ke baad se ‘Bhai Dooj’ ka tyohar aaya, jo bhai-behen ke prem ke majboot bandhan ko manata hai.

Bhai Dooj is a festival that strengthens the sacred and affectionate bond between brothers and sisters. On this day, sisters apply a tilak (vermilion mark) on their brothers’ foreheads and pray for their long life. It is believed that this ritual protects brothers from the wrath of Yamaraj, the god of death. Celebrated on the second day after Diwali, which is Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, this festival is also known as ‘Yam Dwitiya’ and ‘Bhratri Dwitiya’.
Many brothers take a holy dip in the Yamuna River or other sacred rivers on this day, seeking blessings for good fortune and a long life. There are various legends associated with the celebration of Bhai Dooj. One such legend is related to Yamaraj and his sister, Yamuna Devi.
Yamaraj and Yamuna were born from the womb of Chhaya, the wife of Lord Surya (the Sun god). Yamuna had immense affection for her brother Yamaraj and would often invite him to her home for a meal. However, Yamaraj would consistently find excuses to avoid her invitations. Finally, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, Yamuna once again invited Yamaraj for a meal.
At that moment, Yamaraj contemplated the fact that his duty always involved taking away the lives of living beings. He felt that no one in this world ever desired his presence in their home. But his sister Yamuna continued to invite him repeatedly. So, he decided to accept her invitation as a mark of respect for his sister.
When Yamaraj arrived at his sister’s home, he was overwhelmed by her warm hospitality. He served Yamaraj a grand feast. Impressed by his sister’s hospitality, Yamaraj asked her to make a wish. In response, Yamuna requested that Yamaraj visit her every year on the same day for a meal and that any sister who, like her, honors her brother on this day be blessed with the protection of Yamaraj.
Yamaraj granted her wish, and it is believed that since that day, the festival of ‘Bhai Dooj’ has been celebrated. On this occasion, sisters perform aarti for their brothers and wish for their well-being. It is a day to celebrate the unique bond of love and protection between siblings.
