पापांकुशा एकादशी का महत्त्व
अर्जुन कहने लगे कि हे जगदीश्वर! मैंने आश्विन कृष्ण एकादशी अर्थात इंदिरा एकादशी का सविस्तार वर्णन सुना। अब आप कृपा करके मुझे आश्विन/क्वार माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी के विषय में भी बतलाइये। इस एकादशी का क्या नाम है तथा इसके व्रत का क्या विधान है? इसका व्रत करने से किस फल की प्राप्ति होती है? कृपया यह सब विधानपूर्वक कहिए। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा: हे कुंतीनंदन! आश्विन माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम पापांकुशा एकादशी है। इसका व्रत करने से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं तथा व्रत करने वाला अक्षय पुण्य का भागी होता है।
आश्विन शुक्ल एकादशी के दिन इच्छित फल की प्राप्ति के लिए भगवान विष्णु का पूजन करना चाहिए। इस पूजन के द्वारा मनुष्य को स्वर्ग लोक की प्राप्ति होती है। हे अर्जुन! जो मनुष्य कठिन तपस्याओं के द्वारा फल की प्राप्ति करते हैं, वह फल इस एकादशी के दिन क्षीर-सागर में शेषनाग पर शयन करने वाले भगवान विष्णु को नमस्कार कर देने से मिल जाता है और मनुष्य को यम के दुख नहीं भोगने पड़ते।
मनुष्य को पापों से बचने का दृढ़-संकल्प करना चाहिए। भगवान विष्णु का ध्यान-स्मरण किसी भी रूप में सुखदायक और पापनाशक है, परंतु पापांकुशा एकादशी के दिन प्रभु का स्मरण-कीर्तन सभी क्लेशों व पापों का शमन कर देता है।
पापांकुशा एकादशी व्रत कथा
प्राचीन समय में विंध्य पर्वत पर क्रोधन नामक एक बहेलिया रहता था, वह बड़ा क्रूर था। उसका सारा जीवन हिंसा, लूटपाट, मद्यपान और गलत संगति पाप कर्मों में बीता।
जब उसका अंतिम समय आया तब यमराज के दूत बहेलिये को लेने आए और यमदूत ने बहेलिये से कहा कि कल तुम्हारे जीवन का अंतिम दिन है हम तुम्हें कल लेने आएंगे। यह बात सुनकर बहेलिया बहुत भयभीत हो गया और महर्षि अंगिरा के आश्रम में पहुंचा और महर्षि अंगिरा के चरणों पर गिरकर प्रार्थना करने लगा, हे ऋषिवर! मैंने जीवन भर केवल पाप कर्म ही किए हैं।
कृपा कर मुझे कोई ऐसा उपाय बताएं, जिससे मेरे सारे पाप मिट जाएं और मोक्ष की प्राप्ति हो जाए। उसके निवेदन पर महर्षि अंगिरा ने उसे आश्विन शुक्ल की पापांकुशा एकादशी का विधि पूर्वक व्रत करके को कहा।
महर्षि अंगिरा के कहे अनुसार उस बहेलिए ने यह व्रत किया और किए गए सारे पापों से छुटकारा पा लिया और इस व्रत पूजन के बल से भगवान की कृपा से वह विष्णु लोक को गया। जब यमराज के यमदूत ने इस चमत्कार को देखा तो वह बहेलिया को बिना लिए ही यमलोक वापस लौट गए।

Papankusha Ekadashi Ka Mahatva
Arjuna ne poocha, “Hey Bhagwan! Maine Ashwin Krishna Ekadashi, jo ki Indira Ekadashi ke naam se bhi jaani jaati hai, ke mahatva ke baare mein suna hai. Kripya karke mujhe Ashwin/Kartik maas ke shukla paksh ki Ekadashi ke vishay mein bataiye. Is Ekadashi ka kya naam hai aur iske vrat ka kya vidhi hai? Is vrat ka palan karne se kya labh milta hai? Ise vistaar se samjhaye.” Bhagwan Sri Krishna ne kaha, “Arjuna, Ashwin maas ke shukla paksh ki Ekadashi ka naam ‘Papankusha Ekadashi’ hai. Is vrat ko manane se sabhi paap nasht ho jate hain aur vratkar usse anant punya prapt karte hain.
Ashwin ke shukla paksh ki Ekadashi ke din, ichhit fal prapti ke liye Bhagwan Vishnu ki pooja karni chahiye. Is pooja ke madhyam se vyakti ko swarglok ki prapti hoti hai. Arjuna, jo vyakti tapasya aur kathin vraton ke madhyam se ichhit fal prapt karte hain, ve is Ekadashi ke din Bhagwan Vishnu ko shraddha aur bhakti se pranam karke prapt karte hain. Is din unhe sagar mein Sheshnag par Vishnu ki khushiyaan manane ka avsar milta hai, jahan vyakti paap aur dukho se mukt ho jate hain.
Vyakti ko paapo se bachne ka pakka sankalp lena chahiye. Bhagwan Vishnu ki yaad aur stuti ka mahatva to hamesha hota hai, par Papankusha Ekadashi ke din, Bhagwan ke smaran aur kirtan se sab klesh aur paap door ho jate hain.”
Papankusha Ekadashi ki Katha
Ek samay ki baat hai, ek krur bhrahman Vindhya parvat par rahta tha. Uska jeevan paap se bhara tha, aur usne hinsa, chori, madira seva, aur anya dushkarm kiye the. Jab uska ant ka samay aaya, toh Yamaraj ke doot aaye aur usse bataya ki kal unka samay pura ho jayega. Is khabar se vyakul hokar, woh maharshi Angira ke ashram gaya aur unke charano mein gir kar prarthana karne laga. Usne kaha, “Hey Maharshi! Mene jeevan bhar sirf paap kiye hain. Kripa karke mujhe aise upaay bataiye jisse mere sab paap dhul jaaye aur moksh prapt ho.”
Maharshi Angira ne usse Ashwin shukla paksha ki Papankusha Ekadashi ki vidhi batai. Is vrat ka palan karke woh sab paap se mukt ho gaya aur Bhagwan ki kripa se Vishnu lok prapt hua. Jab Yamaraj ke dootne is chamatkar ko dekha, toh woh bhrahman ko bina le jaaye hi Yama lok laut gaye.

Significance of Papankusha Ekadashi
Arjuna inquired, ‘O Lord of the Universe, I have heard a detailed description of the Ashwin Krishna Ekadashi, also known as Indira Ekadashi. Now, kindly explain to me the significance and rituals of the Ekadashi falling on the bright fortnight of Ashwin/Kwar month. What is the name of this Ekadashi, and what is the procedure for observing its fast? What are the merits obtained by observing this fast? Please explain all of this elaborately.
Lord Sri Krishna replied, ‘O Kunti’s son Arjuna, the Ekadashi that falls in the bright fortnight of Ashwin/Kwar month is known as Papankusha Ekadashi. By observing this fast, one can get rid of all sins, and the observer becomes a recipient of immeasurable merits.
On the day of Ashwin Ekadashi, devotees should worship Lord Vishnu for achieving their desired goals. Through this worship, human beings attain the heavenly realm. Those individuals who strive for merits through intense penance can attain a similar reward as by worshiping Lord Vishnu on this Ekadashi day. The merits obtained through such worship grant one a place on the divine serpent bed in the Milky Ocean, where Lord Vishnu reposes. This, in turn, spares the observer from the sufferings of the God of Death, Yama.
One must make a strong determination to free themselves from sins. Remembering and praising Lord Vishnu in any form is rewarding and sin-destroying. However, on Papankusha Ekadashi, the remembrance and chanting of the Lord’s name eliminate all sorrows and sins.
The Story of Papankusha Ekadashi
In ancient times, there lived a wicked man named Kroddhana on the Vindhya Mountain. He was notorious for his cruel actions, including violence, robbery, alcohol consumption, and bad company, indulging in various sinful deeds.
When the time came for him to leave this world, the messengers of Yama, the God of Death, came to take his soul. They informed him that his life would come to an end the next day and pledged to return for his soul. Upon hearing this dreadful news, Kroddhana was overcome with fear.
He sought refuge in the hermitage of the great sage Angira and prostrated before the sage, saying, ‘O revered sage! I have lived a life filled with sin, performing sinful deeds throughout. Kindly tell me a way by which I can get rid of all my sins and attain salvation.’
Upon hearing his plea, Sage Angira described to him the observance of Papankusha Ekadashi. Following the sage’s instructions, Kroddhana observed this fast. As a result of his devotion and the Papankusha Ekadashi fasting, he was liberated from all his sins and obtained salvation. Due to the merit of this fast’s worship, he was transported to the abode of Lord Vishnu. Witnessing this incredible event, the messengers of Yama returned without taking his life.
