Aapki Maya se Bhagwan Vishnu moorchhit ho gaye. Aap sampurna vishv ki mata hain. Har kisi ki ichha poori karna aapke swabhav mein hai. Aapne mujhe sansaar ka rachayita banaya. Yadi main daityon ke haath se mara gaya to tumhari badi apkiirti hogi. Atah kripaya Bhagwan Vishnu ko jagayen aur meri raksha karen.”
Bhagwan Brahma ki prarthna sunkar, Devi Bhagwati Bhagwan Vishnu ki aankhon, mukh, naak, baahon aur hriday se prakat huein aur aakaash mein sthit ho gayin aur Bhagwan Vishnu uthkar baith gaye. Iske baad vah 5000 varshon tak Madhu aur Kaitabh se kada sangharsh karte rahe lekin unhen hara nahin sake. Vichaar karne par Bhagwan Vishnu ko gyat hua ki Devi Bhagwati ne in donon raakshason ko ichha mrityu ka vardaan diya hai. Bhagwati ki kripa ke bina unhen maarna asambhav hai lekin tabhi unhen phir se Bhagwati Yoga Nidra ke darshan huein. Bhagwan ne rahasyamay shabdon se Bhagwati ki stuti ki. Bhagwati ne prasann hokar kaha, “Bhagwan Vishnu! Aap devon ke dev hain. Main in raakshason ko Maya se mohit kar doongi aur tum inhen maar daalna.”
Bhagwan Vishnu Bhagwati Maa ka aashay samajh gaye aur unhonein daityon se kaha ki main tum donon ke yudh se atyant prasann hoon. Atah tum mujhse apni ichha ke anusar vardaan maango. Devi Bhagwati ke jaadu se raakshas mohit ho gaye. Unhonene kaha, “Vishnu! Hum yaachak nahin hai, daata hai. Tumhein jo bhi chahiye, humse prarthana karo. Hum dene ko taiyaar hai.” Bhagwan ne kaha, “Yadi dena hi chahte ho to mere haathon se mrityu svikar karo.” Madhu aur Kaitabh Bhagwati ki kripa par mohit ho gaye aur apni hi baaton se dhokha kha gaye. Bhagwan Vishnu ne raakshason ke siron ko apni jaanghon par rakh kar sudarshan chakra se unhen kaat diya. Is prakaar Madhu aur Kaitabh ka ant hua. Jab unhone Brahma ko maarna ki koshish ki to Bhagwan Vishnu ne unhen maar daala. Tabhi se, Bhagwan Vishnu ko “Madhusudan” aur “Kaitabhajit” ke naam se jaana jaane laga. Markandey Puran ke anusar Uma ne Kaitabh ka vadh kiya tha, jisse ve ‘Kaitabha’ kahlai. Mahabharat aur Harivansh Puran ke anusar hi in raakshason ke meda ke dher ke kaaran hi prithvi ka naam “Medini” pada.

कौन थे मधु और कैटभ,क्यों भगवान को 5000 सालों तक युद्ध करना पड़ा
प्राचीन समय की बात है।. संपूर्ण श्रृष्टि में पानी ही पानी था उस समय केवल भगवान विष्णु शेषनाग शय्या पर शयन कर रहे थे। तभी उनके कानों के मैल से मधु और कैटभ नाम के दो शक्तिशाली राक्षस पैदा हुए। वे सोचने लगे कि हमारी उत्पत्ति का कारण क्या है? कैटभ ने कहा, “भाई मधु! भगवती महाशक्ति ही इस जल में हमारी शक्ति को बनाये रखती हैं। उनके पास अपार शक्ति है. उन्होंने ही इस जलतत्त्वकी रचना की है। यह परम पूज्य शक्ति ही हमारी उत्पत्ति का कारण है। उसी समय, आकाश में एक सुंदर “वाग्बिज” सुनाई दिया। उन दोनों ने सोचा कि यह तो भगवती का महामन्त्र है। अब वह ध्यान करने लगे और वही मंत्र दोहराने लगे । उन्होंने अन्न-जल त्यागकर एक हजार वर्ष तक कठोर तपस्या की। देवी महाशक्ति उनसे प्रसन्न हुईं। अंत में आकाशवाणी हुई – मधु और कैटभ मैं तुम्हारी तपस्या से मैं प्रसन्न हूँ। अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार वर मांगो!
मधु और कैटभ आकाशवाणी सुनकर बोले- सुन्दर व्रत का पालन करने वाली देवि! कृपया हमें इच्छा मृत्यु का वरदान दीजिये। देवी ने कहा, “हे दैत्यो!” मृत्यु तुम्हें केवल तभी मार सकेगी जब तुम मुझसे मृत्यु मांगोगे। न तो देवता और दानव तुम दोनों भाइयों को पराजित कर सकते हैं। देवी द्वारा आशीर्वाद दिये जाने पर मधु और कैटभ बहुत गौरवान्वित हो गये। वे समुद्र में जलीय जंतुओं के साथ खेलने लगे। एक दिन अचानक उन्हें प्रजापति ब्रह्माजी दिखाई दिये। भगवान ब्रह्मा कमल विराजमान थे। इन दैत्यों ने ब्रह्माजी से कहा, “सुव्रत!”
तुम हमसे युद्ध करो. यदि तुम युद्ध नहीं करना चाहते तो इसी समय यहां से चले जाओ, क्योंकि यदि तुममें शक्ति नहीं है तो तुम्हें इस उत्तम आसन पर बैठने का कोई अधिकार नहीं है।” मधु और कैटभ की बात सुनकर ब्रह्मा जी बहुत चिंतित हो गये। उन्होंने अपना सारा समय तप में बिताया। लड़ाई उसके स्वभाव के विपरीत थी. भयभीत होकर वह भगवान विष्णु की शरण में गये । उस समय भगवान विष्णु योग निद्रा में निमग्न थे। ब्रह्मा जी की तमाम कोशिशों के बावजूद उनकी नींद नहीं टूटी। अंततः उन्होंने भगवती योगनिद्रा की स्तुति की और कहा, “भगवती! मैं मधु और कैटभ के डर से आपकी शरण में आया हूँ। आपकी माया से भगवान विष्णु मूर्छित हो गये। आप सम्पूर्ण विश्व की माता हैं। हर किसी की इच्छा पूरी करना आपके स्वभाव में है। आपने मुझे संसार का रचयिता बनाया। यदि मैं दैत्यों के हाथ से मारा गया तो तुम्हारी बड़ी अपकीर्ति होगी। अत: कृपया भगवान विष्णु को जगायें और मेरी रक्षा करें।
भगवान ब्रह्मा की प्रार्थना सुनकर, देवी भगवती भगवान विष्णु की आंखों, मुंह, नाक, बाहों और हृदय से प्रकट हुईं और आकाश में स्थित हो गईं और भगवान विष्णु उठकर बैठ गये । इसके बाद वह 5000 वर्षों तक मधु और कैटभ से कड़ा संघर्ष करते रहे लेकिन उन्हें हरा नहीं सके। विचार करने पर भगवान विष्णु को ज्ञात हुआ कि देवी भगवती ने इन दोनों राक्षसों को इच्छामृत्यु का वरदान दिया है। भगवती की कृपा के बिना उन्हें मारना असंभव है लेकिन तभी उन्हें फिर से भगवती योगनिद्रा के दर्शन हुए। भगवान ने रहस्यमय शब्दों से भगवती की स्तुति की। भगवती ने प्रसन्न होकर कहा, “भगवान् विष्णु!” आप देवों के देव हैं। मैं इन राक्षसों को माया से मोहित कर दूंगी और तुम इन्हें मार डालना
भगवान विष्णु भगवती माँ का आशय समझ गये और उन्होंने दैत्यों से कहा कि मैं तुम दोनों के युद्ध से अत्यंत प्रसन्न हूं। अत: तुम मुझसे अपनी इच्छा के अनुसार वरदान मांगो। देवी भगवती के जादू से राक्षस मोहित हो गये। उन्होंने कहाः “विष्णु! हम याचक नहीं है, दाता हैं। तुम्हें जो कुछ भी चाहिए, हमसे प्रार्थना करो। हम देने को तैयार हैं. भगवान ने कहा, “यदि देना ही चाहते हो तो मेरे हाथों से मृत्यु स्वीकार करो।” मधु और कैटभ भगवती की कृपा पर मोहित हो गये और अपनी ही बातों से धोखा खा गये। भगवान विष्णु ने राक्षसों के सिरों को अपनी जांघों पर रखा और सुदर्शन चक्र से उन्हें काट दिया। इस प्रकार मधु और कैटभ का अंत हुआ। जब उन्होंने ब्रह्मा को मारने की कोशिश की तो भगवान विष्णु ने उन्हें मार डाला। तभी से, भगवान विष्णु को “मधुसूदन” और “कैटभाजित” के नाम से जाना जाने लगा। मार्कण्डेय पुराण के अनुसार उमा ने कैटभ का वध किया था, जिससे वे ‘कैटभा’ कहलाईं । महाभारत एवं हरिवंश पुराण के अनुसार ही इन राक्षसों के मेदा के ढेर के कारण ही पृथ्वी का नाम “मेदिनी” पड़ा।

It was during this period that two powerful demons named Madhu and Kaitabha were born from the wax in Lord Vishnu’s ears. Wondering about the cause of their existence, Madhu said, “Brother Kaitabha, it is the supreme power of Goddess Mahashakti that keeps our strength alive in this water. She possesses immense power. She is the creator of this aquatic element. She is the revered power that is the cause of our existence.”
At that moment, a beautiful sound called “Vagbij” echoed in the sky. Both demons thought that it must be the divine mantra of the goddess. They started meditating and began chanting the mantra. Renouncing food and water, they engaged in rigorous penance for a thousand years. Goddess Mahashakti became pleased with their devotion. Finally, a divine voice echoed – “Madhu and Kaitabha, I am pleased with your penance. Ask for a boon according to your desire!”
Hearing the celestial announcement, Madhu and Kaitabha spoke, “Glorious Devi! Please grant us the boon of immortality.” The goddess replied, “O demons! Death can only touch you if you seek it from me. Neither gods nor demons can defeat both of you unless you ask for death from me.” Delighted with the goddess’s blessing, Madhu and Kaitabha became highly honored. They started playing with aquatic beings in the ocean. One day, unexpectedly, they encountered Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma, adorned with a lotus, appeared before them. The demons said, “O virtuous one! Engage in battle with us. If you do not wish to fight, leave this place immediately, for if you lack the power, you have no right to sit on this excellent seat.”
Hearing Madhu and Kaitabha’s words, Lord Brahma became very worried. He spent all his time in deep meditation. Unlike his nature, he was averse to fighting. Filled with fear, he sought refuge in Lord Vishnu. At that time, Lord Vishnu was immersed in yogic sleep. Despite all of Lord Brahma’s efforts, his sleep did not break. Ultimately, in desperation, he praised the goddess Yog Nidra and said, “Goddess! I have come to your shelter due to the fear of Madhu and Kaitabha. Lord Vishnu is enchanted by your illusion. You are the mother of the entire universe. Fulfilling everyone’s desires is inherent in your nature. You have made me the creator of the world. If I am killed by the demons, it will be a great disgrace to you. Therefore, please awaken Lord Vishnu and protect me.”
Hearing Lord Brahma’s prayers, the goddess Yog Nidra manifested from Lord Vishnu’s eyes, mouth, nose, arms, and heart, and she stood in the sky. Lord Vishnu woke up and sat down. After that, he engaged in a fierce battle with Madhu and Kaitabha for five thousand years, but he couldn’t defeat them. Reflecting upon the situation, Lord Vishnu realized that the goddess had granted the demons the boon of wishing their own death. Without the grace of the goddess, it was impossible to kill them. At that moment, they again witnessed the divine yogic sleep of Goddess Yog Nidra. Lord Vishnu praised her with mystical words. Pleased, the goddess said, “Lord Vishnu! I will enchant these demons with my illusion, and you can then kill them.”
Lord Vishnu understood the intention of Goddess Mahashakti and said to the demons, “I am extremely pleased with your battle. Therefore, ask for a boon according to your desire.” Enchanted by the magic of Goddess Mahashakti, the demons said, “Vishnu! We are not beggars; we are givers. Ask for whatever you want, and we are ready to give. Lord Vishnu replied, “If you are willing to give, then accept death from my hands.” Madhu and Kaitabha, under the influence of Goddess Mahashakti’s magic, were deluded and betrayed by their own words. Lord Vishnu placed their heads on his thighs and severed them with his Sudarshan Chakra. Thus, the end of Madhu and Kaitabha came. When they attempted to attack Brahma, Lord Vishnu killed them. From then on, Lord Vishnu became known as “Madhusudana” and “Kaitabhajit.” According to the Markandeya Purana, Uma killed Kaitabha, and due to the heap of their fat, the earth was named “Medini,” as per the Mahabharata and Harivamsa Purana.
