Sabhi rishiyon ne kaha ki is hatya ke paap ka prayaschit karne ke liye Devi Ganga ko yahan laya jana chahiye. Tab Gautam Rishi ne Shivling ki sthapna ki aur uski pooja karne lage. Gautam Rishi ki bhakti se prasann hokar Bhagwan Shiv aur Mata Parvati wahan prakat hue. Bhagwan Shiv ne Gautam Rishi ko ashirwad mangne ko kaha. Tab rishi Gautam ne Bhagwan Shiv se Devi Ganga ko is sthan par bhejne ka ashirwad manga.
Devi Ganga ne kaha ki yadi Bhagwan Shiv prakash roop mein bhi is sthan par rahenge tabhi ve bhi yahin rahengi. Jab Devi Ganga ne aisa kaha, toh Bhagwan Shiv Brahma, Vishnu aur swayam Mahesh wahan Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling ke roop mein rahne lage aur jaisa ki unhone vachan diya tha, Ganga nadi Gautami ke roop mein wahan behne lagi. Gautami nadi ka naam Godavari bhi hai. Yah Godavari nadi ka udgam sthal hai, jise Dakshin Ganga kaha jata hai. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling ke paas teen parvat hain jinhein Brahmagiri, Nilgiri aur Ganga dwar ke naam se jana jata hai. Shri Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling mein Trimurti ka vaas hai. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling mandir mein teen chhote Shivling hain jinki Tridev (Brahma, Vishnu aur Mahesh) roop mein pooja ki jati hai. Dharmik manyata hai ki Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling ke darshan karne se sabhi manokamnaen poore hoti hain aur pichhle aur is janam mein kiye gaye papo se mukti milti hai.

श्री त्रंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग की पौराणिक कथा
प्राचीन काल में देवी अहिल्या के पति गौतम ऋषि ब्रह्मगिरि पर्वत पर रहकर तपस्या करते थे। उस क्षेत्र में कई ऋषि-मुनि थे जो गौतम ऋषि से ईर्ष्या करते थे और उन्हें अपमानित करने की कोशिश करते थे। एक दिन सभी ऋषियों ने गौतम ऋषि पर गाय की हत्या का आरोप लगाया। सभी ऋषियों ने कहा कि इस हत्या के पाप का प्रायश्चित करने के लिए देवी गंगा को यहां लाया जाना चाहिए। तब गौतम ऋषि ने शिवलिंग की स्थापना की और उसकी पूजा करने लगे। गौतम ऋषि की भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती वहां प्रकट हुए। भगवान शिव ने गौतम ऋषि को आशीर्वाद मांगने को कहा. तब ऋषि गौतम ने भगवान शिव से देवी गंगा को इस स्थान पर भेजने का आशीर्वाद मांगा।
देवी गंगा ने कहा कि यदि भगवान शिव प्रकाश रूप में भी इस स्थान पर रहेंगे तभी वे भी यहीं रहेंगी। जब देवी गंगा ने ऐसा कहा, तो भगवान शिव ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और स्वयं महेश वहाँ त्र्यंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में रहने लगे और जैसा कि उन्होंने वचन दिया था, गंगा नदी गौतमी के रूप में वहां बहने लगीं। गौतमी नदी का नाम गोदावरी भी है। यह गोदावरी नदी का उद्गम स्थल है, जिसे दक्षिण गंगा कहा जाता है। त्रिबंकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग के पास तीन पर्वत हैं जिन्हें ब्रह्मगिरि, नीलगिरि और गंगा द्वार के नाम से जाना जाता है। श्री त्र्यंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग में त्रिमूर्ति का वास है। त्र्यंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर में तीन छोटे शिवलिंग हैं जिनकी त्रिदेव(ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश) रूप में पूजा की जाती है धार्मिक मान्यता है कि त्र्यंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग के दर्शन करने से सभी मनोकामनाएं पूरी होती हैं और पिछले और इस जन्म में किए गए पापों से मुक्ति मिलती है।

They said that in order to atone for this sin, Ganga Devi should be brought to that place. Gautam Rishi then established a Shiva lingam and began to worship it. Pleased with Gautam Rishi’s devotion, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati appeared there. Lord Shiva blessed Gautam Rishi, and he asked for Ganga Devi to be brought to that place.
Ganga Devi said that she would only stay there if Lord Shiva remained there in his manifested form. When Ganga Devi said this, Lord Shiva, Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh all began to live there as Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlingam, and as promised, Ganga Devi began to flow there as the Gautami River. The Gautami River is also known as the Godavari River. This is the source of the Godavari River, which is known as the Southern Ganges.
Near Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlingam, there are three mountains known as Brahmagiri, Nilgiri, and Ganga Dwar. The Tri-Murti reside in the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlingam temple. The temple has three small Shivlings which are worshiped as the Tri-dev (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh). It is believed that by visiting the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlingam, all desires are fulfilled, and one attains liberation from sins committed in past and present lives.
