Ek samay ki baat hai, Bhagwan Brahma ke Vedon ko vishaal rakshas Hayagriva ne chura liya. Sarvatra ajnaan ka andhkaar phail gaya aur paap tatha anyaay ka bolbala ho gaya. Dharm ki raksha ke liye Bhagwan Vishnu ne Hayagriva avtaar dharan kar rakshas ka vadh kiya aur Vedon ki raksha ki. Kalpaant se pehle, ek punyaatma raja tap kar raha tha. Raja ka naam Satyavrat tha. Raat bhar mein machli ka sharir itna bada ho gaya ki kamandal jevit rahne ke liye chhota pad gaya. Isi prakar raja ne jis bartan mein machli rakhi vah chhota ho gaya aur machli badi ho gayi.
Tab Satyavrat ne machli ko nikaal kar sarovar mein daal diya, lekin sarovar bhi machli ke liye chhota pad gaya. Iske baad Satyavrat ne machli ko nadi mein aur phir samundar mein daal diya. Ashcharya! Uska sharir itna bada ho gaya ki samundar mein jeene ke liye machliyan bhi chhoti pad gayi. Atah, machli ne punah Satyavrat se kaha, “Rajan!” Yeh samundar bhi mere rahne ke liye upyukt nahi hai. Kripaya meri kahin aur rahne ki vyavastha karen. Satyavrat ko ashcharya hua. Usne aisi machli pehle kabhi nahi dekhi thi. Usne ashcharya se bhare swar mein kaha: “Meri buddhi ko vismay ke sagar mein dubo dene vale aap kaun hain? Aapka sharir jis gati se prati din badhta hai, use drishti mein rakhte hue bina kisi sandeh ke kaha ja sakta hai ki aap avashya paramatma hain. Yadi yeh satya hai to kripaya mujhe batayen ki aapne machli ka aakar kyun liya.” Vastav mein ve Bhagwan Srihari the. Matsya rupdhari Srihari ne uttar diya: “Rajan! Rakshason ne Vedon ko chura liya. Sansar bhar mein ajnana aur anyay ka andhakar phailta ja raha hai. Maine Hayagriva ko marne ke liye hi matsya ka rup dharna kiya tha. Aaj se satven din sampurna prithvi jalagn ho jayegi. Usi samay main phir tumhare samne prakat hounga aur tumhein atmatattva ka gyan doonga. Us din se Satyavrat Hari ka smaran karke sansar ke ant ki pratiksha karne lage. Satven din pralay ka drishya upasthit ho gaya. Pani ufnakar apni sima se bahar behne laga. Bhari barish hone lagi.
Kuch hi der mein paani hi paani ho gaya. Saari prithvi jal se dhank gayi. Usi samay ek naav dikhayi di. Satyavrath saat rishiyon ke saath is naav par baithe, unhone naav ke upar sampurn anajon aur aushadiyon ke beej bhi bhar liye. Naav pralay ke sagar mein bahne lagi. Pralay ke is sagar mein is naav ke alawa kuch bhi dikhayi nahin de raha tha. Achank pralay ke sagar mein matsya roop mein bhagwan prakat ho gaye. Satyavrath aur saptrishigan matsyarupi bhagwan se prarthna karne lage ki he bhagwan! Aap hi srishti ke rachayita hain, aap hi shikshak hain aur aap hi rakshak hain. Kripaya hamein apni sharan mein lekar hamari raksha karen. Satyavrath aur saptrishi ki prarthna se bhagwan matsya prasann hue. Apne vachan ke anusar, unhone Satyavrath ko gyaan diya aur kaha: “Sabhi jeevit praniyon mein se, main akela rehta hoon.” Koi uncha ya neecha nahin, sabhi prani saman hain, sansar naswar hai. Naswar sansar mein mere alawa kuch bhi nahin hai. Ek prani jo apna jeevan jeeta hai aur har cheej mein mujhe dekhata hai antatah khud ko mujhmein paata hai. Matsya roop mein bhagwan se gyan prapt karne ke baad Satyavrath ka jeevan dhany ho gaya. Vah jeevit rehte hue hi jeevan se mukt ho gaye. Jab pralay ka prakop shant hua, to matsya roop mein bhagwan ne rakshas ko maar dala aur usse vedon ko cheen liya. Bhagwan ne ved punah Brahma ji ko de diye.

भगवान विष्णु के मत्स्य अवतार की कहानी
एक समय की बात है, भगवान ब्रह्मा के वेदों को विशाल राक्षस हयग्रीव ने चुरा लिया। सर्वत्र अज्ञान का अंधकार फैल गया और पाप तथा अन्याय का बोलबाला हो गया। धर्म की रक्षा के लिए भगवान विष्णु ने हयग्रीव अवतार धारण कर राक्षस का वध किया और वेदों की रक्षा की। कल्पान्त से पूर्व, एक पुण्यात्मा राजा तप कर रहा था। राजा का नाम सत्यव्रत था। सत्यव्रत न केवल पुण्यात्मा थे बल्कि अत्यंत उदार हृदय भी थे। एक समय प्रभात का समय था, सूर्योदय हो चुका था। सत्यव्रत ने कृतमाला नदी में स्नान किया। स्नान करने के बाद जब वह आहुति देने के लिए अंजलि मे जल लेकर गए तो जल के साथ एक छोटी मछली भी अंजलि मे आ गई। जैसे ही सत्यव्रत मछली को नदी के पानी में छोड़ने वाले थे, मछली ने कहा, “राजन !” बड़े जलीय जीव छोटे जीवों को मारकर खा जाते हैं। अवश्य ही कोई बड़ा जीव मुझे भी मारकर खा जायेगा। कृपया मेरी जान बचायें. सत्यव्रत के हृदय में करुणा जाग उठी। उसने मछली को पानी से भरे कमंडल में रख दिया। रात भर में मछली का शरीर इतना बड़ा हो गया कि कमंडल जीवित रहने के लिए छोटा पड़ गया। इसी प्रकार राजा ने जिस बर्तन में मछली रखी वह छोटा हो गया और मछली बड़ी हो गई।
तब सत्यव्रत ने मछली को निकालकर सरोवर में डाल दिया, लेकिन सरोवर भी मछली के लिए छोटा पड़ गया। इसके बाद सत्यव्रत ने मछली को नदी में और फिर समुद्र में डाल दिया। आश्चर्य! उसका शरीर इतना बड़ा हो गया कि समुद्र में जीवित रहने के लिए मछलियाँ भी छोटी पड़ गईं। अत: मछली ने पुनः सत्यव्रत से कहा, “राजन !” यह समुद्र भी मेरे रहने के लिये उपयुक्त नहीं है। कृपया मेरी कहीं और रहने की व्यवस्था करें. सत्यव्रत को आश्चर्य हुआ. उसने ऐसी मछली पहले कभी नहीं देखी थी। उसने आश्चर्य से भरे स्वर में कहा: मेरी बुद्धि को विस्मय के सागर में डुबो देने वाले आप कौन हैं? आपका शरीर जिस गति से प्रतिदिन बढ़ता है, उसे दृष्टि में रखते हुए बिना किसी संदेह के कहा जा सकता है कि आप अवश्य परमात्मा हैं। यदि यह सत्य है तो कृपया मुझे बताएं कि आपने मछली का आकार क्यों लिया। वास्तव में वे भगवान श्रीहरि थे। मत्स्य रूपधारी श्रीहरि ने उत्तर दियाः राजन! राक्षसों ने वेदों को चुरा लिया। संसार भर में अज्ञानता और अन्याय का अंधकार फैलता जा रहा है। मैंने हयग्रीव को मारने के लिए ही मत्स्य का रूप धारण किया था। आज से सातवें दिन सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी जलमग्न हो जायेगी। पानी के अलावा कुछ भी नजर नहीं आएगा. आपके पास एक नाव पहुंचेगी, आप सभी अनाजों और औषधियों के बीजों को लेकर सप्तऋषियों के साथ नाव पर बैठ जाइयेगा। उसी समय मैं फिर तुम्हारे सामने प्रकट होऊंगा और तुम्हें आत्मतत्त्व का ज्ञान दूंगा। उस दिन से सत्यव्रत हरि का स्मरण करके संसार के अंत की प्रतीक्षा करने लगे। सातवें दिन प्रलय का दृश्य उपस्थित हो गया। पानी उफनकर अपनी सीमा से बाहर बहने लगा। भारी बारिश होने लगी.
कुछ ही देर में पानी ही पानी हो गया. सारी पृथ्वी जल से ढँक गई। उसी समय एक नाव दिखाई दी। सत्यव्रत सात ऋषियों के साथ इस नाव पर बैठे, उन्होंने नाव के ऊपर संपूर्ण अनाजों और औषधियों के बीज भी भर लिए। नाव प्रलय के सागर में बहने लगी। प्रलय के इस सागर में इस नाव के अलावा कुछ भी दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था। अचानक प्रलय के सागर में मत्स्य रूप में भगवान प्रकट हो गये। सत्यव्रत और सप्तर्षिगण मत्स्यरूपी भगवान से प्रार्थना करने लगे कि हे भगवन्! आप ही सृष्टि के रचयिता हैं, आप ही शिक्षक हैं और आप ही रक्षक हैं। कृपया हमें अपनी शरण में लेकर हमारी रक्षा करें। सत्यव्रत और सप्तऋषि की प्रार्थना से भगवान मत्स्य प्रसन्न हुए। अपने वचन के अनुसार, उन्होंने सत्यव्रत को ज्ञान दिया और कहा: “सभी जीवित प्राणियों में से, मैं अकेला रहता हूँ।” कोई ऊँचा या नीचा नहीं, सभी प्राणी समान हैं, संसार नश्वर है। नश्वर संसार में मेरे अलावा कुछ भी नहीं है। एक प्राणी जो अपना जीवन जीता है और हर चीज में मुझे देखता है अंततः खुद को मुझमें पाता है। मत्स्य रूप में भगवान से ज्ञान प्राप्त करने के बाद सत्यव्रत का जीवन धन्य हो गया। वह जीवित रहते हुए ही जीवन से मुक्त हो गये। जब प्रलय का प्रकोप शांत हुआ, तो मत्स्य रूप में भगवान ने राक्षस को मार डाला और उससे वेदों को छीन लिया। भगवान ने वेद पुनः ब्रह्मा जी को दे दिये।

The Story of Lord Vishnu’s Matsya Avatar
Once upon a time, the vast Vedas of Lord Brahma were stolen by the demon Hayagriva. The darkness of ignorance spread everywhere and the voice of sin and injustice prevailed. To protect righteousness, Lord Vishnu took the Hayagriva avatar, killed the demon and saved the Vedas. Before the end of the world, a virtuous king named Satyavrata was performing penance. Satyavrata was not only a virtuous soul, but also had an extremely generous heart. One morning, after taking a bath in the Kritamala river, Satyavrata took some water in his palms to offer as a sacrifice, and a small fish also got caught in his hands. As soon as Satyavrata was about to put the fish back into the river, the fish said, “O King! Big aquatic beings kill small beings and eat them. Surely, some big fish will also kill and eat me. Please save my life.” Compassion arose in Satyavrata’s heart. He kept the fish in a water-filled pitcher. Overnight, the fish grew so big that the pitcher became too small for it to survive. In the same way, the container in which Satyavrata kept the fish grew small, and the fish grew big.
Then Satyavrata took out the fish and put it in the lake, but the lake also became small for the fish. After that, Satyavrata put the fish in the river and then in the sea. Amazing! Its body became so big that even the fish became small to survive in the sea. Therefore, the fish said to Satyavrata again, “O King! This sea is not suitable for me to live in. Please make arrangements for me to live somewhere else.” Satyavrata was surprised. He had never seen such a fish before. He said in a voice full of wonder, “Who are you who can immerse my mind in the ocean of wonder? Without a doubt, your body grows every day at a rate that can only mean you are certainly the Supreme Being. If this is true, please tell me why you have taken the form of a fish?” In truth, they were Lord Vishnu. The one who took the form of a fish, Lord Vishnu said, “O King! The demons stole the Vedas. Ignorance and injustice are spreading throughout the world. I took on the form of Matsya (fish) to kill Hayagriva. Seven days from now, the entire earth will be engulfed in water. Nothing will be visible except water. A boat will come to you and you will take the seeds of all grains and medicines with the seven sages on the boat. At the same time, I will appear before you again and give you knowledge of the soul. From that day on, Satyavrata began to await the end of the world by remembering Lord Vishnu. The scene of the deluge appeared on the seventh day. Water began to overflow its limit. Heavy rain started to fall.
In just a short time, there was water everywhere. The whole Earth was covered in water. At that time, a boat appeared. Satyavrata and the seven sages were aboard the boat. They had filled the boat with all kinds of grains and medicinal seeds. The boat began to float in the ocean of destruction. Nothing could be seen in this ocean except the boat. Suddenly, Lord appeared in the form of a fish in the ocean of destruction. Satyavrata and the seven sages began to pray to the fish-shaped Lord, “Oh Lord! You are the creator of the universe, the teacher and the protector. Please take us to your refuge and protect us.” The prayers of Satyavrata and the saptarshi pleased the fish-shaped Lord. According to his promise, he gave Satyavrata knowledge and said, “I am the only living being among all living beings. None are higher or lower, all living beings are equal, and the world is impermanent. Apart from me, there is nothing in this ephemeral world. A living being who lives his life and sees me in everything finally finds himself in me.” After obtaining knowledge from the fish-shaped Lord, Satyavrata lived a blessed life. Even though he continued to live, he became liberated from the bondage of life. When the calamity of destruction subsided, the fish-shaped Lord killed the demon and took the Vedas from him. Lord Brahma was handed the Vedas back by God.
