Rishyamook parvat shrenkhala ke neeche ek parvat par Riksharaj naam ka ek vishal rakshas rehta tha. Kisi ne unse poocha ki is parvat ko Rishyamook kyun kaha jata hai. Isliye unhone kaha ki Ravan se sataaye hue kai rishi muni ek saath aaye aur maun rahkar Ravan ka virodh kiya. Jab Ravan wahaan se vijay ke liye nikla to usne saikdoon rishi-muniyon ko ek sthan par ekatrit dekhkar poocha ki itne saare mahaan log yahaan kya kar rahe hain. Tab rakshason ne uttar diya – Maharaj! Ye sadhu-sant aapke dwara prataadit hokar yahaan chupchap ekatrit hote hain aur aapka virodh karte hain. Un sab ko maar do. Ravan ke aadesh par rakshason ne in sabhi rishiyon ko maar daala. Unhi ke kankaalon ke avasheshon se is parvat ka nirmaan hua isliye ise Rishyamook parvat kaha gaya.
Riksharaj naam ka yeh rakshas bahut shaktishaali tha. Vah idhar-udhar ghoomta raha aur apni taqat ka ghamand karta raha. Is parvat ke paas ek atyant sundar taalab tha, lekin is taalab ki visheshata yeh thi ki jo bhi ismein snan karta vah atyant sundar stri ban jaata tha. Yeh baat Riksharaj ko nahin pata tha. Ek din vah manoranjan ke liye taalab mein kood gaya aur jab vah baahar aaya to usne dekha ki vah ek atyant sundar stri shodashi mein badal gaya hai. Isi beech Devaraj Indra ki nazar is stri par padi. Yeh dekhate hi uski chamak feeki pad gayi. Ye chamak mahila ke baalon par padi. Unhi se Bali ka janm hua. Kuchh der baad jab suryoday hua to surya ki nazar bhi is sundar stri par padi aur surya dev bhi uski sundarta par mohit ho gaye. Unka tej bhi skhalit hokar stri ki garbhashay grieva par pada. Unhone jis putra ko janm diya uska naam Sugriv tha. Uski gardan par bijli girne ke karan uska naam Sugriv pada. Donon sage bhai the. Bada bhai Bali Indra ka putra tha aur chhota bhai Sugriv surya ka putra tha. Baalon par tej girne se Bali aur grieva par tej girne se Sugriv naam pada. Donon ka palan-poshan ek hi Riksharaj naamak rakshas stri ne kiya aur unhone unhi Rishyamook parvat ko apna nivaas sthan banaya.

कैसे जन्म हुआ था बाली और सुग्रीव का ?
ऋष्यमूक पर्वत श्रृंखला के नीचे एक पर्वत पर ऋक्षराज नाम का एक विशाल राक्षस रहता था। किसी ने उनसे पूछा कि इस पर्वत को ऋष्यमूक क्यों कहा जाता है। इसलिए उन्होंने कहा कि रावण से सताए हुए कई ऋषि मुनि एक साथ आए और मौन रहकर रावण का विरोध किया. जब रावण वहां से विश्वविजय के लिए निकला तो उसने सैकड़ों ऋषि-मुनियों को एक स्थान पर एकत्रित देखकर पूछा कि इतने सारे महान लोग यहां क्या कर रहे हैं। तब राक्षसों ने उत्तर दिया- महाराज! ये साधु-संत आपके द्वारा प्रताड़ित होकर यहां चुपचाप एकत्रित होते हैं और आपका विरोध करते हैं। उन सब को मार दो। रावण के आदेश पर राक्षसों ने इन सभी ऋषियों को मार डाला। उन्हीं के कंकालों के अवशेषों से इस पर्वत का निर्माण हुआ इसलिए इसे ऋष्यमूक पर्वत कहा गया।
ऋक्षराज नाम का यह राक्षस बहुत शक्तिशाली था। वह इधर-उधर घूमता रहा और अपनी ताकत का घमंड करता रहा। इस पर्वत के पास एक अत्यंत सुंदर तालाब था, लेकिन इस तालाब की विशेषता यह थी कि जो भी इसमें स्नान करता वह अत्यंत सुंदर स्त्री बन जाता था। यह बात ऋक्षराज को नहीं पता थी। एक दिन वह मनोरंजन के लिए तालाब में कूद गया और जब वह बाहर आया तो उसने देखा कि वह एक अत्यंत सुंदर स्त्री षोडशी में बदल गया है। इसी बीच देवराज इंद्र की नजर इस स्त्री पर पड़ी। यह देखते ही उसकी चमक फीकी पड़ गई। ये चमक महिला के बालों पर पड़ी. उन्हीं से बालि का जन्म हुआ। कुछ देर बाद जब सूर्योदय हुआ तो सूर्य की नजर भी इस सुंदर स्त्री पर पड़ी और सूर्य देव भी उसकी सुंदरता पर मोहित हो गए। उनका तेज भी स्खलित होकर स्त्री की गर्भाशय ग्रीवा पर पड़ा। उन्होंने जिस पुत्र को जन्म दिया उसका नाम सुग्रीव था। उसकी गर्दन पर बिजली गिरने के कारण उसका नाम सुग्रीव पड़ा। दोनों सगे भाई थे. बड़ा भाई बाली इंद्र का पुत्र था और छोटा भाई सुग्रीव सूर्य का पुत्र था। बालों पर तेज गिरने से बालि और ग्रीवा पर तेज गिरने से सुग्रीव नाम पड़ा। दोनों का पालन-पोषण एक ही ऋक्षराज नामक राक्षस स्त्री ने किया और उन्होंने उसी ऋष्यमूक पर्वत को अपना निवास स्थान बनाया।

How were Bali and Sugriva born?
Under the mountain range of Rishyamook, there lived a giant demon named Raksaraj on a mountain. Someone asked him why this mountain is known as Rishyamook. He said that several sage Munis came here together, silently opposing Ravana. When Ravana left for world domination, he saw numerous great men gathered in one place and asked why so many great people were there. The Rakshasas replied, “Your Majesty, these sadhus and sants were harassed by you, so they gather here silently and oppose you.” Kill them all. Following Ravana’s orders, the Rakshasas killed all the sages. The remains of their skeletons were used to build this mountain, hence it came to be known as Rishyamook mountain.
This demon named Raksaraj was very powerful. He used to roam around and boast about his strength. There was a beautiful lake near this mountain, but the specialty of this lake was that whoever bathed in it turned into a very beautiful woman. This was not known to Raksaraj. One day, when he jumped into the lake for entertainment, he came out and saw that he had turned into a very beautiful sixteen-year-old woman. Meanwhile, the sight of this woman caught the attention of Indra, the king of gods. His aura faded upon seeing her. The aura went into the hair of the woman and Bali was born. Shortly after sunrise, the sun’s rays fell on this beautiful woman and even Surya Dev became infatuated with her beauty. His rays fell on the woman’s uterus and caused her to become pregnant. He named the son Sugriva. The lightning bolt that hit his neck caused him to be named Sugriva. They were both brothers. The elder brother, Bali, was the son of Indra, and the younger brother, Sugriva, was the son of Surya. The lightning bolt hit Bali’s hair, and the bolt hit Sugriva’s neck. Both were nurtured and raised by a Rakshasas woman named Raksaraj and made this Rishyamook mountain their residence.
